NCAA Game Summary - Indiana at Purdue

West Lafayette, IN (Sports Network) - Curtis Painter threw for 448 yards and five touchdowns to lead the Purdue Boilermakers to a 62-10 win over the Indiana Hoosiers in the annual battle for the Old Oaken Bucket at Ross-Ade Stadium.

Painter converted 38-of-54 passes for the Boilermakers (4-8, 2-6 Big Ten) as they snapped a two-game slide to close out the regular season. Keith Smith reeled in 12 passes for 136 yards and a score, followed by Desmond Tardy with his nine grabs for 114 yards and a touchdown as well. Running back Kory Sheets carried the ball 15 times for 61 yards and three TDs.

The Hoosiers (3-9, 1-7) were paced by Kellen Lewis who converted 13-of-25 passing for 92 yards and the school's lone touchdown of the afternoon. However, Lewis was picked off twice and lost a fumble in the team's fourth straight loss and the ninth in the last 10 opportunities.

Purdue scored 34 unanswered points, beginning with a Tardy nine-yard TD reception from Painter just 2:04 into the opening quarter. A 79-yard strike from Painter to Aaron Valentin four minutes later pushed the lead to 14-0.

Carson Wiggs knocked through a 24-yard field goal at the 6:06 mark of the period, while Brandon Whittington's five-yard TD reception made the score 24-0 at the end of the first.

Sheets scored his first touchdown of the day on a one-yard run to begin the second quarter, followed by a 38-yard field goal from Wiggs.

Trailing by 34 points, the Hoosiers posted their first score of the day at the 2:49 mark of the second when Austin Starr converted a 27-yard field goal for the visitors.

Closing out the first half Sheets made his way into the end zone once again, this time on a four-yard effort, to make the score 41-3 in favor of the home team.

It was more of the same in the third quarter as Painter connected with Greg Orton on a six-yard TD pass play and Sheets raced across the goal line from 17 yards away, making the score 55-3 at the end of three.

Indiana finally worked its way into the end zone when Lewis connected with Ray Fisher on a 16-yard scoring play, but less than five minutes later the Boilermakers scored on their 10th straight possession as Painter and Keith Smith hooked up on an 18-yard TD pass to give Purdue a commanding 62-10 triumph.

The Boilermakers registered an amazing 35 first downs and 596 yards of total offense, compared to just 214 yards for Indiana. Purdue ran 34 more offensive plays, forcing the Hoosier defense to remain on the field for nearly 35 minutes.

The outing was also the last for Purdue head coach Joe Tiller, the school's all-time winningest coach. Although this was a down year for the Boilermakers, Tiller still managed to guide his teams to 10 bowl berths in the previous 11 campaigns.

The 52-point decision ties the largest margin of victory at Ross-Ade Stadium, a feat achieved twice previously, both under the direction of coach Tiller.
